Simo Cell - BFDM 018 // PARTY 5 MIX EP

A tough selection of club readiness make up Simo Cell’s return to Brothers From Different Mothers. The 5-track EP rattles through mutant 90BPM [approx] tracks spanning a spectrum of influences and scenes, tied together with a string of off-centre low-end and percussion that the Parisian-based DJ/Producer has come to be known for.

Uranium begins the EP as it means to go on, crooked basslines waver as kick drums slam through a Dancehall-esque pattern. Elements drop off to give space for double time percussion and - for not the last time in the EP - it doesn’t feel a million miles away from what might be heard coming out of dBridge’s Exit camp. A Wink Gone Wrong and The Terrible Effect of Purple Drank share similar atmosphere, as misty synths fall away to crucial half-time pressure.

Frantic drum breaks roll away from a disorientating hook in Balandbeat; all keen examples of Simo Cell’s ability to keep tracks engaging and lively throughout. La Pulga - the only track to include a vocal - oozes a driven carnival/reggaeton groove, and continues the trend of the producers Football-inspired material (his previous EP on BFDM, “Pogdance” was named after Pogba, while La Pulga nods towards Lionel Messi).

The producer mentioned on the RA review that that he ‘wanted to mess around with different styles.’ BDFM018 is a 5-tracker that does this over and over; and has fun doing so in the process.
